ROBERT RACE - MOTION IMPOSSIBLE
13-21 MAY (7 days / 8 nights)
This is a unique, week-long opportunity to collaborate with a master automata-maker on a collaborative project, discovering and sharing his wealth of skills and techniques. Prepare for some full-on teamwork, exciting new ideas and excellent fun!
Automata can be powerful and enigmatic objects and the interest in them is increasing whether it be a mechanical moving figure or a sculpture constructed to act as if by its own motive power. Cogs, Gears and Automata are often featured in popular culture, film and television, where they are appreciated for their aesthetic, their power and the uncanny feeling that if it moves ….. its alive! Drawing on his previous experience - teaching science and running a teachers' centre - Robert will, during this week-long event at Les Soeurs Anglaises, be working alongside participants from all walks of life (sculptors, engineers, animators, crafters and amateur enthusiasts) to produce one large, permanent, kinetic sculpture for our extensive gardens that might be driven by air, wind or water (or all three!).
The Project is limited to 8 people.
Robert Race is celebrated for making animated objects which move in interesting and often novel ways, manipulating a wide range of natural, re-used and recycled materials. His work is represented in the collections of: Museum of Childhood, London; Japan Museum of Contemporary Toy, Okayama, Japan; Arima Toys and Automata Museum, Hyogo, Japan; Arts Council (South East) Craft Collection.
“The idea of machines as animate objects, evokes deep responses. I like working with reused and recycled materials because they retain traces of their previous uses - like people they have a back-story and a continuing potential."
